“Shall We Swim?” is a 2011 teen comedy released directly to DVD. The 33-minute film concentrates on sexual awakening experiences of two teenage protagonists. The female adolescent voices her curiosity and desire in her new found self. It all happens in the swimming pool. She accidently discovers the secret of sexual pleasure in front of the water outlet, while he awkwardly searches the path to sexual happiness on the little golden mannequin. Water flowing images symbolize the searching of erotic desire. Sensual explorations of young lives have just begun.
This film takes a positive view toward teenage sex education, contrary to the mainstream discourses which threaten teenagers with STDs and stigmatize those who dare to explore and express themselves as problematic teenagers. In addition to recognizing the needs and curiosities of teenagers in their sexual identity development, this film focuses on female adolescent voice in her sexual awakening process which has been often neglected in the mainstream commercial films and health education textbooks.
